Design centered on the sign-in experience

Design centered on the sign-in experience improves the digital journey from the very first interaction, building trust and removing friction.

Design centered on the sign-in experience

Have you ever stopped to think about the sign-in screen of your favorite applications? Probably not. And that is exactly what the best designs are aiming for: access so simple and natural that it goes unnoticed. Achieving that simplicity, however, requires deep and detailed work. Behind every seamless sign-in there is a complex process, especially when millions of users around the world are involved.

Microsoft has taken a step forward by completely redesigning the sign-in and sign-up experience. This is not just a new look, but a total transformation that places trust, identity and user well-being at the center. The goal is for every person to feel secure and welcome from the very first moment.

The human brain and first impressions

Psychology plays a key role in the design of digital experiences. Studies show that people make decisions and form opinions within seconds, guided by emotions and subconscious perceptions. If the first contact with a platform is confusing or frustrating, many users leave before discovering the product's real value.

That is why Microsoft has committed to creating a clear, intuitive and pleasant sign-in experience. Every detail is designed to build trust and make access easier, removing unnecessary obstacles and reducing friction at every step.

Simplifying complexity: design for people

The authentication process, known as SISU, is much more than a formality. It is the gateway to the digital ecosystem and it has a direct impact on user satisfaction and loyalty. Good design is not only visually appealing; it is also functional, reliable and easy to use.

To achieve this, the Microsoft team analyzed the main problems users were facing: inconsistent imagery, cluttered interfaces, context switching and outdated authentication methods. The solution was to commit to simplicity, removing unnecessary elements and unifying the experience across every device and service.

Adopting the Fluent 2 design language has been key in this process. Thanks to it, the interface is cleaner, more accessible and more coherent. Logos and custom backgrounds were removed to reduce distractions, and navigation has been simplified so that anyone, regardless of their experience, can complete sign-up or sign-in without complications.

Details that make the difference

In digital design, small details can have a big impact. Microsoft has incorporated smooth animations, friendly transitions and clear messages that guide the user at every step. The goal is for the experience to be so natural that it requires no effort and raises no doubts.

Microcopy, that is, the short, approachable text that guides the user, has been carefully crafted to convey support and trust. As a result, instead of feeling instructed, users feel accompanied and understood.

In addition, familiar patterns and well-known conventions have been incorporated to reduce mental load. Elements such as animated illustrations, large input fields and clear calls to action help make the process intuitive and accessible for everyone.

Personalization and visual coherence

Another notable aspect of the new design is the integration of each product's visual identity. Sign-in now harmonizes Microsoft's Fluent system with the colors and styles of services such as Xbox. This not only reinforces brand recognition, but also brings a sense of personalization and familiarity, regardless of the platform being used.

Security without complications: the passwordless future

Security is a priority in the digital world. That is why Microsoft has made passwordless authentication a central part of the new experience. Now, new sign-ups start with a simple code verification, removing the need to remember passwords.

Modern methods, such as passkeys, offer greater protection and less friction. Users can choose to remove passwords entirely and rely on safer, easier-to-use alternatives. In addition, account recovery has been simplified: what previously required several steps can now be resolved with a single click.

Meaningful design that builds trust

The redesign of the sign-in and sign-up flow at Microsoft reflects a deep conviction: true simplicity is achieved through effort and attention to detail. By focusing on the user, on their emotions and needs, the result is an experience that is not only functional, but also human and approachable.

Understanding how people behave and designing with empathy not only improves the experience, but also strengthens the relationship between the user and the platform. The new SISU journey lays the foundation for lasting trust, greater engagement and a more meaningful connection within Microsoft's digital ecosystem.
